Saving Energy on Your Electric Lighting

Are you looking for ways to save energy on your electric lighting?  If so, you can start saving money on your monthly electric bills simply by replacing light bulbs when they burn out with more energy-efficient light bulbs.  The following are some tips that you may find helpful on how you can conserve energy as well as reduce energy costs on your electric lighting each month:

Install Lower Watt Bulbs

If you are still using older bulbs in your lamps or overhead lights, you should make sure they are lower watts.  For example, you may not need a 60 watt bulb in a table lamp when a 40 watt bulb will put out enough light.  Of course you want adequate lightning in any room of your home, but when you have four different lights in one room, lower watt bulbs provide enough light.  You can start saving money on your energy bill simply by using and replacing bulbs with lesser watts.

Remove the Bulb in the Refrigerator

Even though you or your family members may like to hold the refrigerator door wide open while snooping inside for food or drinks. To discourage this waste of energy and save money on your electric bill, you may opt to remove the bulb inside the refrigerator.  If the door is held open wide enough, then there should be adequate lighting to find items.  For children, you can also set a flashlight for them to use to see inside the refrigerator. By removing the bulb, not only do you save money on energy costs but perhaps also discouraging kids from playing with the refrigerator door, opening and closing it like a revolving door.

Use a Night Light

If you want a small amount of light to lead you to and from the bathroom during the night, use a night light instead of leaving a bathroom light on all night.  The overhead bathroom light burns a lot more energy when compared to a night light. You may also opt to install or use lights that are battery operated because this will save a substantial amount on your on your light bills.

Turn Off Lights When Leaving the Room

Turing lights off in unoccupied room in your home is on of the easiest things to do when it comes to saving energy.  While this may seem like common sense, but some homeowners do not realize how much they could save just by clicking off lights. Not only can you save on your lighting bill, as well as the need to buy extra light bulbs for lights left burning all the time.

Set Outside Lights on a Timer

If you have outdoor lights, to save energy you can set the outside lights to switch on automatically at dark by using a timer.  Besides saving energy, outside lights are also used for safety precautions. Lighted pathways or lawn spotlights are often used to guide homeowners indoors after dark.  In addition to using timers, you can also set outdoor lights on motion sensors to alert homeowners of intruders or unwelcome guests. Outdoor lights not only save energy but also serve as home security devices.

Switch to New Bulbs

New “green” energy saving light bulbs are becoming more popular among homeowners because of their benefits.  While these bulbs cost a little more money than regular bulbs but overall can save you money over the long run when it comes to your light bill.  The greatest benefits of these environmental-friendly bulbs not only cut energy costs when used, but they also have a longer burn life compared to regular bulbs, saving you even more money.
