Common Sense Ideas to Save Energy

Even the most frugal homeowners may be wasting energy without even realizing it.  Both adults and the children in your family can help to save money on your energy bill by simply acting responsibly and exercising common sense.  The following are some helpful tips that any family can use to cut energy costs:

In or Out?

Did you know that every time you open and close your doors to go outside that you’re wasting energy?   By opening the door and running in and out of your house you let warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer escape.  For the owners of pets kept inside, consider installing a door with a pet door also included to avoid needlessly wasting energy.

Take a 10 Minute Shower

That’s all the time you need to get clean!  While many of us enjoy the luxury of long showers, if you’re trying to cut down on energy use, then set a 10 minute shower house rule.  It’s simple: Take a 10 minute shower and get out.  You can start saving money immediately on your energy bill just by conserving water, especially hot water, usage in your home.

Turn Off the TV When Not in Use

Your dog or cat will be fine when left alone without the benefit of leaving the TV running to entertain an empty house.  There’s really no good reason to leave the TV on in the room when no one is watching.  Televisions today are not like those found back in the 1960s.  The older models took a while to “warm up” but with today’s technology, the minute you turn your TV on, you can start watching with a push of a button!  To save more on your energy bill, simply turn the TV off when not watching.  It’s a novel idea, but it really does work to save energy!

If you have a habit of leaving the TV run at night for background noise, you can use the timer feature on your TV and set it to turn off once you’re asleep. By doing so, your TV won’t be left running all night consuming valuable energy.

Switch the Lights Off

Another novel idea. Leaving lights on in an empty room is one of the biggest energy wasters in any home.  If you’re going to be out for the night or leave your home unattended for a weekend trip, use a smaller lamp or even lights that turn on automatically once it gets dark outside.  Also, you can install energy-saving light bulbs that not only save energy but also burn longer than regular light bulbs.

If you need light to guide your path to the bathroom during the night, then you should place a nightlight in either your bedroom or bathroom to help assist you.  Nightlights reduce energy usage but still able to provide enough light to navigate from one room to another at night.  Turning off lights in your home is a simple and easy way to save energy!
